The California State University, East Bay, main campus is located in the hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Accessibility Services provides services and resources to the campus community. Accessibility Services’ objectives are to ensure an inclusive campus with accountability, by promoting the dignity, self-awareness, and self-advocacy of all individuals with disabilities throughout the University and its activities.

The Accessibility Coordinator works in the Accessibility Services Department and reports to the Accessibility Services Director. The Coordinator provides assistance in the day to day management of the department. The incumbent will directly supervise the Accessibility Services Counselors and Interpreting Services. In addition; this position will lead other related Accessibility Services such as the Accessible
Technology, Media, and Testing Coordinator, and Work-Ability IV. They will also be responsible for all operations related to providing the services mentioned above on campus. In addition, they will handle any faculty or staff issues that may arise. The Accessibility Services Coordinator will meet regularly with the Director of Accessibility and provide updates on staff and related projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise the day to day operations of AS Counselors, Interpreting Services, and related services or staff issues; supervise AS Counselors and Interpreting staff and conduct performance evaluations; in consultation with AS Director, ensure professional development and training for AS Counselors and Interpreting staff; handle personnel-related matters in compliance with bargaining unit agreements; develop, analyze and revise Accessibility Services’ policies and procedures consonant with legal mandates, best practices, and case law to ensure compliance with related Federal and State laws; provide guidance on federal and state contracts related to Work Ability-IV Program; in consultation with Director, provide guidance to AS Counselors and Interpreting Services to resolve disputes regarding students or faculty accommodations requests or services as needed; manage AS department documentation and maintain system to record and share information pertaining to ADA and Section 504 mandates as well as AS policy information; lead Accessible Technology, Media, and Testing Coordinator, and related services or staff issues; provide recommendations to Director on Accessibility Services documentation and operations as necessary; provide guidance and recommendations regarding the AS webpage and related links as necessary; assist AS Director with compiling data and generating evaluation reports of AS program operations as needed for AS program assessment and evaluation; advise Counseling and Interpreting Services staff on consultation to faculty and staff regarding academic accommodations, compliance with legal responsibilities, as well as instructional, programmatic, physical and curriculum modifications; collaborate with Director on generating proposals for new funding sources for externally funded programs; assist Director in managing Budget related decisions and documentation

OUTREACH AND EDUCATION
Assist Director in the implementation of strategic development of outreach and education for the university community ( faculty, staff, and students) to facilitate collaboration and enhance equal access, universal design, and integration of students with disabilities into the Hayward and Concord campus community; participate in outreach presentations as needed; be a resource to all stakeholders; provide consultation as appropriate to the Hayward and Concord campus communities; other duties as assigned.

REQUIRES: Equivalent to over five years of experience, directing the work of technical/professional and/or administrative staff; managing/coordination of programs or an organizational unit. A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Management, Special Education or a related field is required or a combination of education, training and relevant work experience. Supervisory skills and experience is highly preferred; proficient in the English language (grammar & reading). Must be able to work under stress in meeting deadlines; must be willing to walk/travel within and between buildings on campus using stairs/ elevators/ ramps as appropriate; must be able to work effectively on the computer for sustained periods (with appropriate breaks as needed). Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, staff and community is essential.

PREFERRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Familiar with building business processes and organizing workflow; knowledge of online data management, shared servers, electronic information sharing; report writing; possession of proficient computer skills with the most commonly used software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.); experience with database management; A Master’s degree in related field preferred; familiarity with Assistive Technology; knowledge of ADA Laws and Section 504 in Higher Education; previous experience in Higher Education Settings; familiarity with related programs and services such as TRIO programs, Interpreting and Captioning Services, Assistive Technology, Alternative testing environments, Work Ability, Department of Rehabilitation, Regional Centers.

College Level Education-Related Supports for Students with Disabilities: Implementing Best Practices

Social support has achieved national attention as a key component of the mental health recovery paradigm for persons with psychiatric disabilities. This session disseminated results from a pilot study investigating the meaning of social support for adults with psychiatric disabilities using a focus group technique and grounded theory approach.

This website has BLOGS, PODCAST, and FORUMS dedicated to many aspects of Rehabilitation Counseling.

- BLOGS are editorial-type commentaries on various VR topics. Current blog entry topics include research, conferences, multiculturalism, and rehabilitation counselor appreciation day.

- PODCAST involve audio discussions with published authors about recent research followed by a discussion with VR practitioners on implementing the research topics. Transcripts of podcast interviews are available at the site. Current podcast discussion topics include transition services, consumer perspectives, and return on investment.

- FORUMS are discussion boards across several topics related to VR (see below). The forums are brand new at this moment and are awaiting registrants for posts.

Viewers may leave comments to specific blog or podcast entries, ask questions or comment at the forums, and even leave a voice mail for playback on the podcast shows. As you can tell, the site is very interactive and is designed to bring various stakeholders of vocational rehabilitation together for dialog and discussion. We are pleased to announce that SFSU’s Rehabilitation Student Association (RSA) is now a student chapter of the California Rehabilitation Association (CRA)! We celebrated this new professional relationship.

RSA is delighted that Tony Sauer the director of California Department of Rehabilitation attend. CRA honored Luciana Profaca and gave an Employer Award to Manpower. Dr. Robert Williams won the raffle and donated his share to RSA. CRA also gave their share to RSA. Thank you Dr. Williams and CRA for generously donating to RSA.

Everyone had a fabulous time, and it met and exceeded our expectations. The grand success of this event is due in large part to all your efforts. On behalf of RSA, thank you for sharing your energy and time. I greatly appreciated your help, and we all hope you’ll help out again. Also, I hope some of you are considering being RSA officers next year! The photos will be posted on our RSA website. Thanks again!
