Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Technology Project (RET) Ray Grott was named a Fellow of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America, the organization’s highest award for substantial and long-term contributions to the organization and the field. The RET Project is a program of the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement.

Ray Grott

Ray Grott, MA, ATP, RET

Ray Grott joined RESNA in 1992. He has served on numerous RESNA committees, including as Chair of the Membership committee and the Meetings Committee—in which capacity he took major responsibility for organizing two annual conferences. Most recently, he is serving as Secretary of the Board of Directors. Ray has a long history as a presenter of instructional courses and workshops (sometimes with his alter-ego, “ErgoMan.”) He can always be counted on to share his latest custom designs and is widely known for his frequent postings to the RESNA technology listserve. His contributions to RESNA and his support of others in the field earned him RESNA’s Distinguished Service and Mentor awards. Ray is the Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (RET) Project at San Francisco State University, through which he provides direct AT services to hundreds of people throughout the region. He also teaches, participates in research, reviews and edits articles and proposals, evaluates new products, supports disability rights issues, and volunteers on committees such as the Assistive Technology Advisory Committee for his state’s Department of Rehabilitation.

“Ray’s insight and critical thinking skills, not to mention his willingness to ‘speak up,’ have served RESNA extremely well. He can always be counted on to be very thoughtful and objective in his contributions to the business of running the organization.”

“The AT field is lucky to have him. Ray naturally rises to the top of a group or organization because of his competence, dedication, integrity, intelligence, broad experience, and astonishing work ethic.”

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The New York State Education Department is pleased to announce that applications are still being accepted for the Marge A. Tierney Scholarship Award. The application deadline for this fall is June 1, 2010.

A scholarship of up to $1,000 is awarded annually to an individual enrolled in a Graduate Rehabilitation Counseling Program. Although the candidate must be a New York State resident, the applicant can be enrolled in a program outside New York State. Preference is given to individuals with a disability.

This scholarship was established in memory of Marge A. Tierney, an employee whose career in vocational rehabilitation spanned 33 years. Marge’s professional life centered on the vocational rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, ensuring that they received the services needed to obtain employment. Her commitment to the rehabilitation community and professional development of Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors makes this scholarship an appropriate tribute to her efforts on behalf of the vocational rehabilitation profession and individuals with disabilities.

Information about Marge and the scholarship is available at:
http://www.vesid.nysed.gov/scholarship/about.htm or you can search the name on the VESID website at: http://www.vesid.nysed.gov.

Please share this information with students and colleagues.

Steve Shanahan, who works at DOR and is current chair of our rehab occupational committee for the whole state, just WON the Presidency for the entire bargaining unit! Nancy Swindell will no longer be president and we will now have someone who will bring our profession in California forward (instead of the opposite, which was happening). His entire slate won. Still awaiting the very final ratification, but the polls have closed! This is just wonderful news and he asked me to share with all who may be interested.
